As its title might imply, this show is like a brief glance at a source of emerging light. Each of the seventeen artists in the show is a recent graduate of the Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) program at San Jose State University; yet, this is not to be confused with an MFA show. Rather, this exhibition comprises an entrance to the space of the art world. The intermingling of the artists’ work suggests an enmeshment of ideas and an ethos of collaboration, both of which are at the heart of a solid MFA experience. Here, the impacts of their shared experiences are allowed to be played out on a more ambitious scale, if not by virtue of more space than by way of a broader engagement with the community. Taking in the diverse bodies of work created by these artists, one is struck by the individuality and strength of the art, in an era in which MFA’s outnumber exhibiting artists and graduate programs are criticized for churning out reiterations of their faculty’s work. Indeed, this work is as wide-ranging as it is engaging. From interactive video installations to custom-made quilted cozies, from painting and photography to high tech sculpture, the seventeen artists in this show present strong, diverse bodies of work, representing a culmination of work in SJSU’s highly-regarded fine art program. Glim, Glom, Glam is the art of right now. -Marisa S.
