This summer ICA visitors will be introduced to the work of new media artist Clive McCarthy in an exhibition entitled LCA@ICA. McCarthy’s unique works capture the best of still photography and video in a departure from what contemporary audiences have come to expect from digital media.

After more than 20 years in the semiconductor industry, McCarthy has embarked on something new. In 2000, he began taking digital images and printing them himself. He was so intrigued by the process and the immediate results that he enrolled in the MFA program at the San Francisco Art Institute. Five years later, the recent MFA graduate has created an artistic process that utilizes his knowledge and skills in electrical engineering and photography to produce what he terms, “moving still images.” As viewers gaze at the framed works on the wall, they will encounter surprising effects. McCarthy’s work is a puzzling optical treat. The artist enjoys manipulating and experimenting with computer programs to create his work. However, one aspect of the work that he enjoys most is the way in which it challenges the human desire to be ever-entertained.

LCA@ICA will be presented in the ICA Focus Gallery in conjunction with the main gallery exhibition, NextNew, a showcase of new trends in contemporary art. McCarthy’s work will also be featured in the rear window Night Moves program. McCarthy will create a site-specific video installation for the window that collages numerous shots of the highways and byways surrounding San Jose.

Clive McCarthy was born in London in 1946. He received a B.Sc. in Electronics from the University of Salford in 1969 and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2004. He has lived in northern California since 1979.
