In the Round includes site-specific installations that intervene and transform the architectural space, large-scale wall constructions, clusters of free-standing sculptures, as well as experimental use of unorthodox materials and approaches to art making. The breadth of subject matter is as diverse as the media and stylistic approaches, ranging from environmental concerns to nostalgic childhood memories. Feminism, spirituality, craft, deception, beauty and whimsy are all addressed. The sheer variety of materials, forms and techniques that are presented here make it clear that sculpture is not a stable concept with fixed boundaries, but rather, something that is continually redefined by artists. While the exhibition is not held together by a single thematic narrative, it presents the current sculptural vocabulary of the Bay Area. Despite the incredible variety, there are striking similarities among the works as well. From conceptual to representational, figuration abounds. Whether articulated in marble and bronze, or materials such as hog gut, cast cement, wire, wood, steel and cardboard, sculptors continue to be inspired by the beauty and expressiveness of the human form. Improvisation, bred from a healthy disrespect for tradition, is the hallmark of much of this work. The whimsical irreverence is reflected in the non-traditional techniques and the innovative use of unorthodox materials. Finally, there is a repetition of imagery. Vessels, ladders, triangles, and bulging bellies are incorporated and portrayed in numerous ways that provide a captivating connection between the works. The work in this exhibition has been culled from the wealth of diverse work that is being created by artists from the Pacific Rim Sculptors Group (PRSG). Formed in 1988 by six San Francisco Bay Area sculptors, the PRSG was created to establish a new forum for sculptors to meet, exchange ideas, and exhibit their work. Currently there are more than 150 artist members in PRSG throughout Northern and Central California. The exhibition includes the work of 15 sculptors, selected from nearly 100 submissions. Artists included in this presentation are Ed Clapp, Teresa Cunniff, Pamela Merory Dernham, Sara Gordon, Peter Hiers, Jane Johnson, Mary V. King, Nancy Ziegler Nodelman, Paulette Peterson, Laurie Polster, Susan Leibovitz Steinman, Gina Telcocci, Marta Thoma, Ellen Vogel, and Ann Weber. In the
Round
is dedicated to the memory of Paulette Peterson (1957 - 2004).
