Multi-media artist Kato Jaworski uses light and air to create the seventh installation of her site-specific piece Vapor. In her desire to portray the invisible nature of air, Jaworski constructed numerous disks created from translucent vinyl, hand-sewn into metal forms. As the multiple strands of colored rings drift and shimmer in response to air currents in the exhibition space, they serve as a visual reference to the unseen atmosphere. “Most of the time we don’t give much thought to it. But, everyday we navigate through it, we sleep surrounded by it and we breathe it,” says Jaworski of her inspiration for Vapor . Vapor will be presented in the rear window of the ICA as part of the new-media series Night Moves, video projections, sound installations, kinetic light projects, and other new media pieces animate and illuminate the windows, giving the ICA a nighttime presence while adding to the downtown cultural landscape. Jaworski is a painter who lives and works in Richmond where she co-owns Jagwire Design, a graphic arts studio. She also teaches in several community arts organizations including Arts Benicia and the Richmond Art Center. She has taught drawing and design at the collegiate level and has exhibited her work throughout the Northeast in both solo and group venues, including New York City. She has a MFA from Johnson State College, in collaboration with the Vermont Studio Center, and a BA from UCSC. Image: Installation detail of Vapor, Vinyl and metal
