Martha Gorzycki : Veil

January 14 - March 20, 2005
Opening Reception: January 14, 2005

Martha Gorzycki      Veil, 2002       DVD installation, frosted vellum on a steel frame and base

Veil maps a space where two symbols representing two different motions of vision meet. This work and others by Gorzycki incorporate ideas from culture, nature and perception in relation to how Gorzycki experiences symbols in her dreams. Gorzycki says of the use of icons and symbols in her work, "I find dreams to be imbued with icons whose meanings are fluid and ever-changing over time; I may understand an image to have one meaning at the time a dream occurs and another meaning years later." Veil demonstrates Gorzycki's use of repeating patterns as a means to slow the viewer's individual perceptions down and to notice subtle shifts over time.

The ICA's new media installation series, "Night Moves," provides after-dark programming in the gallery's front and rear windows. Video projections, sounds installations, kinetic light projects, and other new media works animate and illuminate the window, giving the ICA a nighttime presence while adding to the downtown cultural landscape.
