Position title: Installation and Facility Manager
Reports to: Executive Director

San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is a non-profit visual art gallery located in downtown San Jose. Now in its 28th year, the ICA is a leading contemporary arts venue in California, presenting work of emerging and established artists in all media. The ICA's new facility, which opened to the public in June 2007, includes nearly 4,000 square feet of exhibition space as well as a printmaking studio for individual and group workshops, and up to 4 single-person residencies throughout the year. The exhibition program includes up to 22 exhibitions annually, including rear-projection video work in the front windows after dark. Educational programming includes Talking Art, an ongoing series of panel discussions focusing on topics of interest to the working artistic community, and artist workshops and lectures. The ICA is governed by a 19-person volunteer Board of Directors and managed by a five-person full-time staff and a number of part-time employees, as well as a corps of volunteers.

Qualifications: BA and at least 2 years experience in an art museum or gallery. Excellent art handling and exhibition installation experience; experience with proper packing, crating and art installation methods. Must have solid organizational and supervisory skills, the ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously, and to work collaboratively with other staff in a busy gallery environment. Willingness to fully participate in a team environment and process. Conscientious and detail-oriented. Appreciation of the necessityto follow through with paperwork, record-keeping and documentation. Receptive to the ideas of others and able to work cooperatively to prioritize tasks and negotiate conflicting demands. Basic computer and AV knowledge. Willingness to work some overtime. Salary range dependent on experience.

Responsibilities:

  • The Installation and Facility Manager oversees exhibition installation, security and facility maintenance.
  • Provides support to the curators in the planning and implementing of exhibition installations including preparing gallery spaces, installing exhibitions designed by curators, lighting, cleaning and maintaining exhibition spaces, and supervising contract staff and volunteers.
  • Work with curators on shipping of artwork, contacting fine arts shipper as necessary and creating all documents required for artwork pick-up, delivery and return.
  • Assist in the transportation of artwork as required.
  • Manage gallery security.
  • Manage maintenance contracts and supervise custodian.
  • In charge of set-up and break-down of all special events and facility rentals
  • Assist as needed for special projects and events as required

Print Center Internship

The ICA Print Center is looking for a printmaking student or emerging printmaker to serve as an assistant to the Print Center Director. The intern will have the opportunity to facilitate our Open Access program, assist workshop instructors and the Master Printer, and serve as studio and supplies monitor.

This position requires experience in intaglio, monotype and digital processes. The ideal candidate will also be interested in working in a collaborative studio environment, be conscientious and detail oriented, and have an interest in teaching. Candidate must be available for some weekend and evening workshop hours. An average weekly commitment of 8 hours for a minimum duration of 4 months is required.

Curatorial Internship (Summer internships are closed. Fall applications will be accepted beginning July 15)

The San Jose ICA seeks a self-motivated and enthusiastic curatorial intern to assist with our ongoing exhibitions and public programs. Under the supervision of the assistant curator, the curatorial assistant receives, organizes and prepares artists submissions for review. Other projects may include creating artist files, updating artist records, research, and assisting with day-to-day administrative tasks.

The ideal skills for this position include attention to detail, enthusiasm for contemporary art practice, and the ability to follow through with long term projects. Technical skills such as Photoshop, InDesign, Microsoft Word, and Dreamweaver are highly desirable, though not necessary. Minimum time requirement is 8 hours a week.
