Artist and Exhibition Submissions
The ICA encourages creativity by presenting and interpreting thought-provoking contemporary art to a diverse audience. While the ICA supports Bay Area emerging and mid-career artists, we encourage submissions from non-regional artists as well.
The San Jose ICA offers open submissions for select exhibition opportunities listed below. Open calls for artists and for professionally organized exhibitions are periodically updated. Please see Submission Requirements.
First Fridays– The ICA is seeking artist proposals for contemporary art performances and projects with interactive or participatory elements. The performances will be featured during First Fridays and/or during special one-night events at the ICA. Sound-based artists and artists interested in engaging directly with a public are also encouraged to submit a proposal. Special consideration will be given to student artists and recent graduates in addition to emerging to midcareer artists.
Sandbox Projects – In the Silicon Valley, technologists use the term “Sandbox” as a figurative place to experiment with new code or ideas. In a similar spirit, the ICA’s distinctive Sandbox Projects support emerging and mid-career artists to experiment, take risks, and develop new works that would not otherwise be realized. The resulting site-specific, large-scale, immersive installations provide ICA visitors with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience a unique art environment.
Future Sandbox Project artists include: Tracey Adams, Sofie Ramos, and Tracey Snelling. Previous Sandbox Projects include: Kathy Aoki: #WishYouWereHere; Val Britton: Intimate Immensity; Mike Rathbun: Urgency; Chris Dorosz: Painted Room; Christel Dillbohner: Ice Floe; and Ligorano / Reese: Crater Bay Area.
Sandbox Project recipients (artist/artist team) will receive an honorarium (ranging from $1,500- $5,000) to design, create and complete an installation project. The honorarium can be used towards project expenses including materials, supplies, transit of artwork (both ways), travel, per diem, and artist fee. The ICA will additionally support the project with access to a team of professional preparators during install and de-install, provide marketing for project and host an exhibition opening.
The ICA is not accepting applications at this time. Our next Call for Proposals for Sandbox Project will take place in 2019. Please check back often for updates on how to apply.
