ICA Artist Portfolio Reviews

Cost: $65 *All participants must be ICA members at the $40 Individual Level or above
In this annual artist professional development program, leading curators, art dealers, and educators provide expert advice and insights in a portfolio critique.
Each artist participant will have the opportunity to meet with two of twelve reviewers for 20 minutes each (chosen during registration.) Below is a list of confirmed reviewers.

Tara de la Garza; Artist and Independent Curator at The Frank
Tara de la Garza is an Irish/Australian artist who has exhibited nationally and internationally with the The Lodge Gallery NYC, San Diego Art Institute, No Longer Empty, Chashama, David & Schweitzer NYC, Figment, MassMOCA and Aggregate Space Gallery SF. She currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. Tara studied a BA/Fine Art at Curtin University, Australia. Tara has curated shows with No Longer Empty in NYC and has run her own gallery space, 2 One Two Projects in NYC. Currently Tara is producing independent curatorial projects with The Frank: Contemporary Art Space in empty storefronts and is building a mobile art installation space, MO: Art.
Selene Foster; Curator, Palo Alto Art Center
Selene has worked as a curator, producer, designer, and artist in the San Francisco Bay Area for almost 15 years, working closely with artists at several institutions and non-profits, including the Palo Alto Art Center, Root Division, the Museum of Broken Relationships, and BAASICS. She received a B.A. from Bard College in New York, and an M.F.A in Studio Art from Mills College in Oakland, CA. She currently lives in Palo Alto with a scientist, her two kids, and some chickens.
Tanya Gayer; Independent Curator, Exhibitions Manager at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, Chief Curator of the Soundwave ((8)) Biennial
Tanya Gayer is a curator and writer based in Oakland, CA. Her curatorial projects and research examine the state of the archive in mobile and web-based media, algorithmic manipulation of culture and identity, and performance-based new media. Gayer received her dual masters degree in Curatorial Practice and Visual + Critical Studies from California College of the Arts and her BFA from University of Nevada, Reno.
Her previous curatorial projects have been exhibited at Gray Area, San Francisco, CA; CTRL + SHFT Gallery, Oakland, CA; Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, CA; Pro Arts Gallery, Oakland, CA; Hayes Valley Art Works, San Francisco, CA; Embark Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Some Thing Spacious, Oakland, CA; and Adobe Books Backroom Gallery, San Francisco, CA. She has been in residence at Picture Berlin, Berlin, Germany and Signal Culture, Owego, New York. Her writing has been published in Daily Serving, in exhibition catalogs produced by CULT Exhibitions, San Francisco, CA; Holland Project, Reno, NV; Pro Arts, Oakland, CA, Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, CA, and co-produced a one-off audio podcast for a Living Room Light Exchange publication. Gayer has lectured at UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, and at the 2018 CODAME Festival. She is currently the Exhibitions Manager at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art in Sonoma, California and Chief Curator for the Soundwave ((8)) Biennial.
Shirin Makaremi; Independent Curator and Director of Incline Gallery, San Francisco
Shirin Makaremi is an Iranian-American curator and artist. She has organized and curated exhibitions in San Francisco working with emerging Bay Area artists, in particular women and people of color. In her curatorial work, Makaremi is interested in challenging the viewer’s perception of space through experimental and conceptual art. She is drawn to work that creates conversations around political and social issues that force viewers to reflect on their surrounding environment. Makaremi received her BA from San Francisco State University with an emphasis in Studio Art and Art History. She is currently the Director of Incline Gallery, where she has curated several exhibitions. Most recently, Makaremi was accepted into SOMArts Curatorial Resideny program for the 2018-2019 year.
Donna Napper; Gallerist and Art Consultant
Donna Napper has worked in the field of contemporary fine art since 2000. She founded and directed a gallery in Los Angeles for eight years, and moved to the Bay Area to work as the Curator and Director of Public Programs at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. She has been invited to curate and serve as juror for several Bay Area non-profit art organizations including Djerassi Artist Residency Program, Root Division, Embark Gallery, SF Artist Network, Pacific Art League, Pacific Rim Sculptors, and Silicon Valley Arts Council Artist Laureate Award. Napper presently serves on the Executive Committee for ArtTable, the Director of Sales at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary, and works as a corporate art consultant.

Donna Seager; Co-Owner of Seager Gray Gallery
A native of New Orleans, Donna Seager’s education was at the University of Texas, where she got her degree in Art History and English. She began in the art business in 1978, working in galleries in New Orleans and was the director of the Marlborough Gallery in Boston before moving to California in 1989. She continued to work in galleries in the Bay Area until 2005 when she opened Donna Seager Gallery. In 2011, she partnered with Suzanne Gray to form Seager Gray Gallery and moved the gallery to Mill Valley where they are a cornerstone of the Marin arts community. Seager has distinguished herself for her discerning eye and commitment to the arts in her area. She has given lectures on the art of the book at international fairs in Miami and San Francisco and curated an exhibition at the Brooklyn Public Library entitled Ten Years of Artist’s Books and This is Not a Book, Chapter 2 for the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. She has served on the bard of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association and the San Francisco Center for the Book and is currently a member of the Marin County Cultural Commission.
Roula Seikaly; Independent Writer and Curator and Senior Editor at Humble Arts Foundation
Roula Seikaly is a writer and independent curator based in San Francisco. She also serves as Senior Editor at Humble Arts Foundation. Her writing is featured on platforms including Aperture, Photograph, Saint Lucy, Strange Fire Collective, SF Camerawork, and KQED Arts. She has curated exhibitions at the Allen Memorial Art Museum, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, and SOMArts Cultural Center. For portfolio reviews, Seikaly is interested in seeing fine art, documentary, and conceptual photography and photo-based projects with a well-defined conceptual direction. She is not interested in reviewing traditional nude or landscape work.
Kara Q. Smith; Assistant Curator at di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art
Kara Q. Smith is curator and writer based in Napa, California. She currently holds the positions of Assistant Curator at di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art and Editor-in-Chief of Thematic Issues at Art Practical.
Jayna Swartzman-Brosky; Program Director at Mills College Art Museum
Jayna Swartzman-Brosky is the Program Director at Mills College Art Department. She conducts the Art+Process+Ideas artist-in-residence program and oversees the museum’s public facing activities including artist programs, publications, and museum events. For over a decade, Jayna has served Bay Area arts and cultural through various roles in the commercial and nonprofit creative sectors. Prior to Mills, Jayna was the Program Director at the Center of Cultural Innovation where she managed grant-making activities and professional development programs for artists and arts professionals in California. She is also a curator, writer, consultant and contributor to Art 21 magazine.
Kathryn Wade; Curatorial Associate at San Jose Museum of Art
Kathryn Wade is curatorial associate at the San José Museum of Art (SJMA). Her recent SJMA exhibitions include Louise Nevelson: The Fourth Dimension (2017) and Rise Up! Social Justice in Art from the Collection of J. Michael Bewley (2018). Before joining SJMA, she worked for two major private collections in San Francisco, the Kramlich Collection of video and new media, and the Steven Leiber Basement, a collection of conceptual art and artist books. She was curator of Void California 1975–1989 (2016) at the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco and The Dorothy Saxe Invitational (2015) at the Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco. Prior to moving to the Bay Area, Kathryn lived in Minneapolis, MN, where she contributed research to the traveling exhibition International Pop (2015) at the Walker Art Center. She received her MA in Curatorial Practice from California College of the Arts in San Francisco and BA from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.
